REDMAN, BRIAN 3/9/1937, Colne, Lancashire, England Starts:12 Points: 8 Wins:0 Poles:0 Fastest Laps:0 IF YOU WANT TO PARTICIPATE OR INITIATE A DISCUSSION ON THIS DRIVERS' CAREER, CLICK HERE Redman was one of sports car racing exponents from the 60’s to the 80’s, but his Formula 1 career was short. He did, however, score points in 1/4 of his starts. Redman began his career in club racing in England, eventually rising to Formula 2, where he reached mild success. He was hired by Cooper for the 1968 season, debuting in the South African Grand Prix in a Maserati engined car. He retired after starting 21st. In Spain, he qualified next to last, but the then BRM engined car was reliable enough to allow Brian to finish an excellent third on his second GP start. In Belgium Redman qualified better, 10th out of 18, but the outing ended in a crash, that put Redman out of commission in GP racing for the rest of the season. However, he was beginning to make a great impression in the sports car ranks, partnering Jacky Ickx in a Ford GT40 in two wins, Brands Hatch and Spa. In 1970 Redman was entered in the South African Grand Prix as a reserve for Graham Hill, who was still recovering from an year end accident. As it turned out, Redman’s services were not required that day. Later in the season Brian was retained by Frank Williams to replace the deceased Piers Courage in the De Tomaso, but the association was not successful. He DNS in the British Grand Prix, and failed to qualify in Germany. At the end of the season Redman somewhat shocked the racing world, announcing his retirement to South Africa. He did show up in the South African Grand Prix, driving a Surtees, and finished 7th. Whether this encouraged him to continue, one does not know, but the fact was that the retirement was short lived, and Redman continued to excel in sports car racing, also debuting in Formula 5000. For 1972, Redman was hired by McLaren as a replacement for Peter Revson whenever the American was away fulfilling U.S. commitments. In his three starts for McLaren, Redman scored points twice, finishing 5th in Monaco, where he qualified 10th, and in Germany as well. He also competed in the French GP for McLaren, finishing 9th. He was also used by BRM to drive the unloved P180 in the US Grand Prix, retiring. By that time Redman was becoming an exponent in Formula 5000, proving he was a good single seater driver as well. His only Grand Prix in 1973 was in the USA, where he drove for Shadow. He started 13, out of 28 entries, but was disqualified for receiving outside assistance. Redman was called again to replace Revson, in 1974, this time due to the American’s untimely death in South Africa. He did finish 7th for Shadow in Spain, 18th in Belgium and retired in Monaco, but eventually Redman figured he would rather remain racing in the USA, where he became Formula 5000 champion for 3 years running. He continued racing into the 90’s, and still appears in vintage racing events
